The engine behind the town's festivities

The festivity committee is the group of neighbours — sometimes backed by the town council, sometimes an independent association — that organises their town's festivities: raising funds, booking the music, handling permits and coordinating every day of the programme. In many small towns, they are volunteers managing budgets of tens of thousands of euros.

How a committee books music

The usual challenge is closing the best possible line-up on a fixed budget. The classic formula splits it between a headline concert, a verbena orchestra for the big nights and charangas for the daytime. The expensive mistakes usually come from booking without a clear contract, not reviewing the technical rider (who pays for the stage and sound?), or waiting too long: the best summer dates fly.
