- A document detailing the sound, lighting, stage and backline requirements that an artist or group needs in order to perform.
What a technical rider contains
The technical rider details everything an artist needs to perform: PA system and power according to capacity, mixing desk, stage monitors or in-ears, microphones, backline (amplifiers, drums, keyboards), lighting, minimum stage dimensions, power outlets and technical staff. It usually comes with a hospitality rider: dressing rooms, catering and production needs.
Why it matters so much when booking
The rider defines who provides what. At festivals and town festivities the promoter usually provides full production and the artist plugs their show into it; at private events it is common for the artist or agency to bring their own equipment. Not reviewing it in time is the most common cause of last-minute cost overruns: emergency backline rentals, generators or staging nobody had budgeted.
