The pasacalles is a festive parade with music on the move: a charanga, batucada or band walks the streets pulling the crowd along to the next act on the programme. It is the classic tool for moving the party — from the town hall to the square, from the vermouth hour to the verbena — and for announcing that the festivities have begun.
Keys to organising it well
The route is everything: a realistic distance (a parade longer than an hour exhausts musicians and crowd alike), marked stops at peñas or squares, and coordination with local police for traffic cuts. When booking, agree the number of musicians, the duration and whether there will be several passes on different days — repeating the same ensemble makes each pass cheaper.
