Orchestra, covers band and DJ are the three most common options for live music at an event. None is better in absolute terms: each fits a particular type of celebration, capacity and budget. Here are the key differences so you can choose wisely.
An orchestra brings together several musicians and vocalists with a broad repertoire and a large-format stage presence. It is the typical choice for town fairs, patron-saint festivities and open-air events with large crowds, where stage presence and volume matter.
A covers band is a smaller, closer-knit line-up that's easy to adapt to medium-sized spaces. It fits weddings and private celebrations well, where you want live music with repertoire flexibility and a more personal touch.
A DJ provides continuous music with no breaks and usually costs less than a line-up of several musicians. It works very well to keep the party going, for a wedding after-party or as a complement to a live band.
For large open-air crowds, an orchestra usually performs better. For an intimate wedding, a band or a DJ is a better fit. If the budget is tight, a DJ is the most affordable base. At many events the best solution is to combine formats over the course of the night.
