Vientos From Suburbia brings ten musicians together for instrumental jazz, swing, funk, rock and brass band sounds.
Vientos From Suburbia is an instrumental jazz-funk orchestra founded in Gran Canaria by musician and composer Julio Pacheco. Ten musicians make up the band, arranged in rhythm and wind sections. Their live sound is full-bodied, melodic and carefully shaped, with plenty of energy.
The show brings together jazz, swing, funk, rock and the character of brass bands. Its instrumental pieces are punchy and catchy, with arrangements that invite listeners to picture a scene as the band plays. New Orleans influences run through the music, reflecting a range of styles associated with the city.
Julio Pacheco developed the project and composed and arranged its self-titled debut album, released in November 2014. The recording featured alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, trombone, trumpet, drums, congas, bass, piano and guitar. The band played its first live presentation of the album in Gran Canaria in March 2015.
Its reference points include The Dirty Dozen and Trombone Shorty, as well as the television series Tremé. The musicians also bring professional experience connected with jazz ensembles such as Perinké Big Band and Gran Canaria Big Band.
This instrumental format works well for concerts and cultural programmes, as well as festivals, weddings and corporate events looking for live music that blends jazz and funk. It can give private celebrations and receptions a distinctive sound, with room for both the rhythmic section and the brass to shine.
