A university tuna group from Las Palmas, playing traditional instruments and Canarian, Latin, Spanish and Mexican music.
Los Tunos del Distrito de Las Palmas belong to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s district tuna. The group began in 1984 as the Tuna de Ingenieros Industriales and took its current name in 1986, following the merger with other university tunas and the addition of students from different faculties. It brings live music to weddings, baptisms, communions, anniversaries and other gatherings.
The musicians sing and play among the audience, without needing sound equipment. Instruments include the lute, timple, guitar, accordion, tambourine, guitarrón and double bass. This close-up format brings the music directly to guests and encourages a sociable atmosphere.
The set draws on Canarian, Latin, Spanish and Mexican music, as well as boleros and pasodobles. Songs in the repertoire include «Clavelitos», «Estudiantina portuguesa», «Compostelana», «Cuando te encuentres sola» and «La morena de mi copla».
Tuna Las Palmas can perform at weddings, baptisms, communions, birthdays, anniversaries, stag and hen parties, retirement celebrations and serenades. Its history includes performances and competitions, along with tours around the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, and trips across Europe, the Americas and Africa.
