“Charloteando” tells Chaplin’s story through narration, film images and live piano.
Teatre MJC presents “Charloteando”, a stage show exploring the life and work of Charles Chaplin. Musician, actor and narrator Carlos Olartecoechea brings together spoken storytelling, film images and humour, accompanying the performance on live piano. It runs for approximately 60 minutes.
The show follows different stages of Chaplin’s life, from childhood and youth to films including “The Kid”, “The Gold Rush”, “The Circus” and “City Lights”. Clips are accompanied by live piano, including themes Chaplin composed for his films. The programme also features scenes from “Modern Times”, with “Smile”, “Limelight” and “The Great Dictator”, whose closing speech brings the journey to an end.
“Charloteando” recalls silent film screenings, when a pianist played alongside the images. Narration and music provide context to Chaplin’s work, with touches of comedy throughout.
The format and subject make it a fit for cultural programmes and general audiences. It needs a stage of approximately 4 by 3 metres and two 230 V power points. The company provides basic lighting, sound and projection.
