A gypsy jazz quartet featuring two guitars, double bass and violin, with swing, improvisation and Balkan rhythms.
Formed in 2018, Hopla Manouche is a quartet inspired by Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de France. Its gypsy jazz draws on traditional American jazz and swing, alongside bal musette, French songs and klezmer music.
Travis Smilen and Noah John Young play guitar, Carlos Rubio plays double bass, and Guillaume Odiau is on violin. The group uses the traditional instrumentation of the style, without wind instruments or drums. It has amplifiers and a mixing desk, and can use suitable sound equipment at the venue.
The set moves between slower and faster passages, with the distinctive pompe rhythm and room for improvisation. Balkan rhythms sit alongside the French gypsy jazz tradition of the 1930s and 1940s. The repertoire includes jazz and gypsy jazz standards.
This live quartet suits weddings, private celebrations and parties looking for an acoustic sound with plenty of movement. Its range allows for more relaxed moments as well as livelier sections.
