El Pelujáncanu gives ancestral Extremaduran folk a fresh sound through original arrangements and a record of over a thousand performances.
El Pelujáncanu is a group of four musicians from Extremadura, formed to preserve and share the region’s ancestral folk traditions. The project takes its name from a figure in Extremaduran mythology: a giant cyclops associated with the forces of nature.
The musicians rework traditional material with arrangements of their own, bringing a fresh perspective to folk while keeping its roots in view. The oral traditions of northern Extremadura’s hills and valleys, along with their mythological figures, inform the project’s cultural identity.
The group has played more than a thousand shows, appearing at festivals including Ortigueira, WOMAD Extremadura, Folk Plasencia, Ollín Khan in Mexico, Belgrade Beer Fest, Folk Faro and Folkez Blai. Its folk based performance can suit local celebrations, cultural programmes and private events looking to feature music from Extremadura. In February 2018, the group released its self-titled debut album and presented it at the Gran Teatro de Cáceres on 12 April.
