Charanga La Melopea provides live music for celebrations with a line-up of 12 to 14 musicians. Most have professional or higher-level music qualifications. The band began in 2004, playing at local bars’ parties in Villafranca de los Caballeros, Toledo, and has since expanded to other events.
The line-up includes percussion, tuba or helicon, euphonium or helicon, trombones, trumpets and saxophones. This range of instruments supports a broad repertoire for celebrations, keeping the music moving throughout the event.
The set combines well-known charanga numbers and pasodobles with versions of rumba, salsa, rock and current music. The group also aims to bring less familiar choices to the charanga format. It has competed in regional and national contests: in 2014 it won first prize at the Regional Charanga Contest in Lillo, and in 2016 it represented Castilla-La Mancha at the National Charanga Festival in Poza de la Sal and won first prize at the 5th National Charanga Contest in Escucha.
